I trust you will allow this bard
His trial of producing
That singular form, so unknown,
As, ‘to Piso’, my own musing

In lipogram, it shall occur
Missing a common digit –
Found following ‘d’, and prior to ‘f’,
Its function is oft rigid

But my aim today, bypassing this,
Is a notion to portray:
An author’s labour in his choosing
Of words that truly say

For stanzas must contain a truth
Imagination must catch flight
Valid art grips man’s mind and soul
And, with flourish, robs his night

How may an artist signify
Or distinguish a shining sight
If not through cautious planning
Of colour, form and light?

So too an author must abound
Through his wary pick of lyric
Or his unassuming stab at rhythm
May, in truth, turn out satiric

Consign a word its fitting rank
Allow no flaw, no fault
Your aim or goal in writing:
Wits and spirit to assault

Author's Comments

My first Tutorial exercise for my Creative Writing course at uni. We had to write a brief "ars poetica" detailing some of the characteristics/requirements of poetry or simply what it is. I also decided to make mine a lipogram; that is, I used no words with the letter 'e'.

Notes
1. Ars Poetica, as well as meaning "The Art of Poetry, is known to mean "Letters to Piso".

2. The use of the male pronoun throughout this piece is not intended as sexist or gender exclusive. It is used due to the presence of the letter 'e' in most female and neutral pronouns (ie. she, her, their).

Dude very cool! You definitely pulled off the requirements I think!

I've never actually attempted a Lipogram.. it looks hard!

Yeah, it's not too hard... Although there were a couple of points where an e would sneak in without me noticing... I had to reread it heaps to check... The main thing with doing it as a lipogram is that means I had to consider each word carefully, and each word was given emphasis as a result... I'd encourage you to try it sometime...

Thanks for the comment

98% of Deviants don't know the difference between "your" and "you're." If you're one of the 2% that wants to punch 'em, put this in your sig.

Yeah.. I can definitely see how it would have a ton of re-writes lol

And I definitely might.. *ponders*

Holy crap. As soon as I read the second stanza, you had me. Even without the most frequently used letter in the English language, this poem reads incredibly smoothly - nothing in it sounds forced at all. The rhyme and meter are also spot-on (I'm not a poet by any means, but I love reading metered poety :)), which is also something few people seem to do (and do well) nowadays.

I'm favin' it :D

I don't mean to tease you,
and I don't know how to please you -
but if there's one thing that I'm sure of,
it's that I don't want to lose you.
